From thearchitect. Ålgård, just outside Stavanger, is a very vibrant congregationwith many activities. One of the aims of the new church was to bring togetheras many functions as possible under one roof. A challenge with the project wastherefore to create suitable rooms for a classroom, an office, a café, withoutaffecting the actual Church space. By loweringthe ground floor partially into the terrain, suitable space to accommodate therange of functions room was generated, leaving the sacral space undisturbed onthe upper floor. – A logical and functional solution that makes the sanctuary anatural and prominent center. Another requirement from the congregation wasthat the church should have an iconic character and a clear christian style.This request was solved by the buildings dynamic sculptural form, giving theappearance of single expression evolving out of the landscape, extendingtowards the sky whilst mirroring the shape and slope of the surroundingterrain. Thebuilding’s shape defines the roof structure as a modern interpretation of atraditional church vault. The main structure consists of Glulam beams in anetwork of triangles, as exposed in the Church room. Every other triangle istilted upwards and reflects the light into the church. The result is an opticalrefraction is seen in traditional dome vaults. The closedtriangles on the other hand, are designed with built-in LED lights. Additionaldaylight is in the church room is enhanced via the northern facade, where thecorner point is lifted slightly upwards in order to allow the light to fallalong the floor in the back part of the room. Simple glass columns providesadditional daylight on either side of the building’s high altarpiece in theglass. The landscape design merges the church into the surrounding countryside.A park separates the cemetery form the church. The area can be equipped with anamfiteatreor a stage suitable for concerts, sports and other activities. TheChurch is designed in accordance with the requirements for universal design.
