the 9/11 memorial, designed by pwp and michael arad, has received 2012 alsa award. it is located at the site of the former world trade center complex, and occupies approximately more than 30,000 square meters. the 9/11 memorial features two enormous waterfalls and reflecting pools which are the biggest artificial waterfall, each about 4,000 square meters, set within the footprints of the original twin towers. the memorial plaza is one of the most eco-friendly plazas ever constructed. the artificial waterfalls nearby flow into the central pools. the sound of water covers the hullabaloo of the city and the waterfalls block outside strong lights. the overall garden planning and waterfall design enhance each other, which not only shows the strong spirits by architecture but also some meaningful details. surrounding the pools on bronze parapets are the names of the dead from new york, pennsylvania and the pentagon in 2013 world trade center bomb attack. near the pools grow 225 trees, including the pear survived in 9/11 attack surrounded by some oak trees. the solemn atmosphere evokes people strong memory for the dead and hope for the rebirth.
