the fish sculpture, adjacent to mapfre tower and hotel arts, is designed by renowned american architect frank gehry for the 1992 barcelona olympics. the sculpture serves as a canopy for the commercial area which links the luxurious hotel arts to the seafront to provide point of interest and activity along the waterfront promenade. the fish sculpture, which is approximately 54 meters long and 35 meters tall, was made from intertwining gilded stainless steel strips supported by a metal structure, its gentle, subtle form marked by its intense gold color. the interplay between the rays of the sun and skin creates the impression of scales, depending on the intensity of the light, and accentuates the organic form of this vast sculpture. the principle elevator and escalator circulation elements for connecting retail levels and parking occur below the monumental sculpture. this fish sculpture was also a landmark in the history of frank o. gehry.
