deutsches historisches museum extension, located on the avenue unter den linden as well as in the adjacent exhibition hall of museum island and with an area of 4700 m2, is designed by master architect i. m. pei. the dignified and refined extension design blended the baroque classical and modern architectural style together is the perfect combination of the new and existing buildings. adopt the triangle as the main concept and strengthen it in the architecture. cut the triangular prism in the north of third floor to form the roof platform and keep the triangle bay-window for visitors to overlook the street. open louvers in the top of northeastern spiral staircase and install the movable lights on the triangular net in the ceiling of the exhibition halls. the triangular perspective makes differences from each point and the simple architecture shape shows the changes of light and shadow, creating different feelings of space and volume for the visitors from the staircase, platform, corridor, etc. the triangle shape, french limestone, north american granite, glass walls, spiral staircase and atrium, "the simple geometry together with volume, large-area walls, change of light and shadow and exquisite details create the aristocratic elegance of i. m. pei style." museum island in the central berlin is the complex of five internationally significant museums, all part of the berlin state museums, altes museum, neues museum, alte nationalgalerie, bode museum and pergamon museum; it reveals the revolution of museum design in the 20th century and organically connects architecture and art collections. in 1999, it was designated an unesco world heritage site. the altes museum in the south, built in 1830, is one of most distinguished neoclassical architecture and the oldest museum of the island; the two-story regular rectangular building borrows heavily from ancient greek and ancient roman classical architecture; the exhibition rooms are grouped around the inner courtyards, which have a big dome and skylight at the top; it is used to display the art collections of ancient greece and ancient roma. the neues museum, built in 1859 was heavily damaged during wwii and the rebuilding was overseen by the english architect david chipperfield. after reopened, it mainly displays the egyptian and prehistory and early history collections. the pergamon museum built in 1930 including antiquity collection, islamic art museum, the middle east museum, is the youngest museum in the island and also the most popular museum in german. the alte nationalgalerie built in 1876 with the first impetus to found a scientists palace is a gallery showing a collection of neoclassical, romantic, biedermeier, impressionist and early modernist artwork. the bode museum built in the early 20th century with baroque style spans across the spree river. it is the home for a collection of italian and germany sculptures, byzantine art, and coins and medals from 7th century b.c. to 20th century a.d.
