potsdamer platz (1992-2002), one of the largest construction projects in europe, was jointly invested by the multinational companies of sony, a & t, daimler benz after the fall of the berlin wall, which transforms the original desert isolation area to the most prosperous center and the new urban landmark of berlin. the project covers an area of 120,000m2 and the total construction area reaches 800,000m2. the three zones of benz zone, sony center and a &t buildings are respectively designed by the pritzker winner renzo piano, american famous architect helmut jahn and italian architect giorgio grassi. benz zone with the largest area as well as sony center has the complex functions of residential, office, commercial and entertainment, while a & t buildings are only for office. almost all world-known architects at that time had been involved in the design of postdamer platz’s buildings for various styles and different forms. adopt the european traditional street block in the benz zone, setting the pedestrian area with the featured corridors in the central plaza and along the streets of old potsdamer platz distributing the office, apartment, residence, hotel, etc. strictly control the scale of buildings and stress the harmony between the private and public space to increase the talk of architecture and human and bring the order of city into the life. a & t buildings are made by five u-shaped, h-shaped and drop-shaped buildings with the unified color and form as well as a small public yard. the design of new potsdamer platz minimizes the use of energy and environmental pollution. most buildings are energy-saving and maximize the use of lights, wind and other natural resources; the combination of green and non-green roofs make full use of raindrops, which flood control and improve the surrounding ecology. the rainwater dropping from the roofs are stored for toilet, irrigation and fire control, but also connected with the artificial lakes and water features to form the water system and color the city life.
